Hospital alert after storms sweep town

Wednesday 5th November 2014

Lightning struck the James Paget Hospital at about 8.15pm today during a thunderstorm which shook the Great Yarmouth area and brought torrential rain.

Fire crews from around the area went to the hospital as a precaution but there were no reports of a blaze.

Christine Allen, chief executive, said: “A lightning strike has hit the hospital site and our telephone services have been affected.

“Although there are phone lines available, we would ask that contact is made with the hospital only if it is urgent so that we can manage the volume of calls. Other systems have also been affected but manual backups are in use.

“We are still proceeding with emergency and urgent surgery. We will be contacting any patients who were due to come into hospital, for an operation or an appointment, and who are now being cancelled.”
