Mardi Gras tosses aside weather worries
Hundreds of people defied heavy rain and took to the streets for Great Yarmouth’s first Mardi Gras on Pancake Day.
The King Street area enjoyed a multi-cultural atmosphere with a Brazilian style parade, street entertainers, and diverse section sof the community joining the fun and pancake tossing.
The event was organised by Yarmouth-based SeaChange Arts and chief executive Joe Mackintosh said it had brought something different to the town and put down a great marker for future events.
Launching the festival, mayor Tony Smith joined in the fun as he danced in a puppet head parade and then inspected pancakes on sale.
Other events included a wacky Total Crepe pancake race, juggling unicyclists, cooking demonstrations by French chef Franck Pontais, of BBC's Ready Steady Cook fame, and a cabaret night.
The Mardi Gras is the first of many cultural events planned for King Street as part of its multi-million pound regeneration into a continental style arts quarter.
