Heliport future in the air

A Great Yarmouth helicopter company is looking at switching its base to Norwich international airport.

CHC’s fleet of five helicopters based at Yarmouth's North Denes heliport has ferried workers to offshore rigs and platforms for the past 40 years.

But now the Aberdeen-headquartered company is asking its offshore customers if they would support the relocation of the heliport's business to Norwich.

If there is strong opposition to the idea it will be dropped.

Yarmouth Borough Council leader Barry Coleman said they were trying to persuade the company to stay at North Denes.

A move could mean losing 70 jobs from Yarmouth and fewer workers would use the town’s hotels and guesthouses.

On average about 30,000 passengers pass through the heliport's terminal to get to the southern North Sea.

A spokeswoman at CHC's Aberdeen head offices said that no decision had yet been made.

The priority was to provide the best possible service to customers and their views were being sought about a potential move.
