Special Guest for Christmas Lights Switch-On announced!


Great Yarmouth Town Centre Partership are delighted to announce that headlining the Mayor’s special guests for this year’s Christmas Lights switch-on will be British Indoor & Outdoor Shotput Champion, and Olympic hopeful Sophie McKinna.
Sophie is a local sporting hero, who both lives and works in Gorleston, and she is hoping to represent Team GB at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games having recently thrown a qualifying shot at the IAAF World Championships this year, and being named the “Breakthrough Athlete” by the British Athletics Supporters Club in October.

Sophie’s growing list of sporting achievements! –

  • Won 2019 British Outdoor Championships in Birmingham in August, qualifying for the World Championships.
  • Won 2019 British Indoor Championships, also in Birmingham in February.
  • Silver medallist in both 2011 World Youth Championships & 2013 European Junior Championships
  • First British female to qualify for the IAAF World Championships shot put final in 36 years.
  • Reached qualifying distance for the 2020 Tokyo Olympic Games (for her throw at the World Championships)
  • Currently ranked No.13 in the world female shot put rankings (as per on 7.11.19)
  • Named as the “Breakthrough Athlete” by the British Athletics Supporters Club on 19th
